Connor Shaw Center Principal's Message

Welcome to the Connor Shaw Family!  As you browse through our website you will come to understand that our first priority is our kids.  The Connor Shaw Center offers a unique opportunity for your child to get to know their fellow fifth graders before they reach the challenging world of Junior High.  Our staff is here to serve the needs of your child and help them with the transition from the elementary school.  Please don't hesitate to contact us if we can be of service to you.
My name is Jack Thomas.  I am very pleased to have been selected to work with your children this year.  I have over 30 years experience in education as a teacher, coach, assistant athletic director and administrator, but I have come to the conclusion that no two days in those 30+ years have been the same.  I am looking forward to meeting you as you get involved with your child's educational program.
Engineers tell us that the strongest shape for any structure is the triangle.  I believe that applies to education as well.  Education is strongest when a partnership exists between the parent, the student and the school.
It is my mission to see that the school upholds its end of the bargain.  You can expect communication on a regular basis from my office as well as your child’s teacher.  We will do everything in our power to see to it that the time your child spends in school each day is productive, enriching, and maybe just a little bit fun.
The student serves as a key link in the communication chain between the home and school.  Students need to ask questions in class to further their understanding of the material, deliver any and all notes and newsletters that go home, keep track of their assignments and do their homework.
The parent needs to work with the student on a daily basis, helping with homework, reading together, checking the assignment notebook, and looking for communications from the school.  Take some time to become familiar with the Illinois learning standards for fifth grade.  These are the standards that will be on the ISAT later in the year.  They can be found at http://www.isbe.state.il.us/ils/.  Provide your child with a suitable environment for homework.  Develop a consistent routine for things such as homework, meals, bedtime and morning preparation.  Stay on top of your child’s attendance.  Missing a day or two here and there may not seem like much, but it is impossible for a child to gain all of the information presented in class by just doing the make up work.  If a question or problem arises, don’t hesitate to call your child’s teacher.  Parents can also help their child by becoming involved in the PTO.  Your child may never admit it, but they really do enjoy seeing their parents volunteering at things like our Thanksgiving Feast, Rocket Day, Fall Festival, and other activities.
Together, we can work for the success of your child and help them to become all they were meant to be.  If I can be of any assistance to you please give me a call or email me at jthomas@peotoneschools.org.  I'm looking forward to a great year and trust that you are too!

Sincerely,

Mr. Thomas
