ART COURSES

Advanced Art
Grade: 11-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: Total grade average of “B” or above in Drawing, Painting and Ceramics or Multi Media (Visual Art)
This Advanced Art course is intended to address a very broad interpretation of sculptural, painting, and drawing issues in three-dimen-sional and two-dimensional design. Design elements and concepts will be articulated through a variety of fabrication processes. It is for the serious art student who wishes to further his/her skill level and knowledge in the different art disciplines.16

Ceramics
Grade: 9-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
This elective course introduces essential technical skills necessary for building an expressive foundation in clay. You will investigate ceramic hand construction techniques such as pinch, coil and slab as well as clay surfacing techniques such as incising, piercing, sprigging, slip decoration and glaze application. While you pursue technical facility with these hand-built ceramic techniques, you will also explore personal and societal views on containers, their function, and construction. Your cooperative, productive studio work ethic is essential for success. You will reflect and analyze your own and the work of others. Emphasis will be on process, exploration, investigation, discussion and critique.

Design
Grade: 9-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
This course enables the students to develop a means of relating the basic two-dimensional elements of line, shape or form, space, tex-ture and color to one another and as a whole. A series of exercises will be provided to explore the elements, principles and categories of design in relationship to a two-dimensional surface. Design provides a necessary background for all other two-dimensional and three-dimensional work.

Drawing
Grade: 9-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
Drawing is the fundamental foundation of any art course offered. The student will be led through a series of drawing techniques designed to improve his/her ability, beginning with the very basic to more advanced skills. If one is to be successful, then one must practice. The student is encouraged to complete extra credit drawing assignments out of class. Students will work with a variety of mediums including: pencil, colored pencil, pastels, conte sticks, charcoal, marker, india ink, colored ink, etc.

Independent Art Studio--(May be taken either or both semesters of senior year.)
Grade: 12 Only 1/2 Credit per semester Prereq: Application & teacher approval
All art classes with a “B” or higher total average.
The student who wishes to advance/excel in any given art course for credit in continuing his development of skills must submit an application for review, be in his/her senior year, and have successfully passed all previous art classes with at least a “B” or higher. The student will have some choice in advanced projects and become independent from the rest of the class. The student will begin to develop a portfolio of his or her art work.

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop CS
Grade: 11-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
The focus of this beginning course in Adobe Photoshop CS is to build a foundation of knowledge and to learn some of the basic fun-damentals in the three main areas of the pixel-based environment of Photoshop: image preparation, image editing, and image creation. The student will explore the Photoshop program and become familiar with the workspace tools, option bars, and palettes. They will learn basic fundamentals by studying examples, doing exercises and following step by step instructions for practical projects. They will be creating new images, cropping, transforming, retouching, resizing and adding artistic touches to images they have developed.

Multi Media (Visual Arts)
Grade: 9-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
This course is designed for the student who wishes to focus on many different art forms, both two dimensional and three dimensional. Some mediums covered may include: wood, metals, plaster, clay, printmaking, batik, and textiles. The student will gain an under-standing of mass, volume, space, and balance by working in three dimensions and creating the illusion of depth by working in two dimensions. Upon completion of this course, the student will have a working knowledge of many different art forms.

Painting
Grade: 9-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: None
This course will focus on different painting styles and techniques throughout art history. Styles will range from impressionism to opti-cal illusion to contemporary trends. Students will learn elements of color theory. Acrylic paint and water colors will be used.

MUSIC / DRAMA COURSES

Band
Grade: 9-12 2 Sem. 1 Credit Prereq: Teacher Approval
This course is composed of students from each of the four grade levels and rehearses during the school day. Performances are a man-datory component of this course as is day to day participation. Students are encouraged to participate in numerous honors groups and contests in addition to the curriculum. Prior knowledge of an instrument is required.17

Chorus
Grade: 9-12 2 Sem. 1 Credit Prereq: None
Chorus is open to freshmen through seniors. Basic techniques involved in singing are discussed and implemented, such as tone pro-duction, diction, blending through unison and part singing, and sight reading. The chorus performs four concerts a year, for the
I. H. S. A. contest, and for community organizations. Performances are a mandatory component of this course as is day to day partici-pation. No prior experience is necessary, just the desire to sing.

Drama / Tech
Grade: 9*- 12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: *Teacher approval for 9th grade students
This class will include an introduction to drama covering a brief history of theatre, basic stage and acting vocabulary, acting skills, stage and tech equipment set up and maintenance, and writing sound and light cues. Students may be expected to memorize mono-logues and dialogues for classroom presentations, evaluate performances, analyze scripts for set requirements, create scale models of sets, write short plays, and design make up and costumes for selected plays. Students will be expected to use their knowledge in some capacity in the drama department’s fall/spring production either as a cast or a crew member.

Music Theory / Composition
Grade: 11-12 1 Sem. 1/2 Credit Prereq: Teacher Approval
This course will review the basic concepts of music theory and progress to composition and arrangement. Students will use hand writ-ten scores, notation software, and musical instruments to complete coursework.
