Director's Notes:
Dear Peotone District Families:
As summer draws ever closer, I am reminded again of how quickly this school year has passed! I am particularly reminded of how the school years have passed more quickly with each summer. I had the pleasure of meeting a number of 4th graders making the step up to the Connor Shaw Center today. I knew so many of these students who stopped over on their tour ever since they were in the SMILES program. I also am reminded of the upcoming graduation classes from the Junior High and High School. It is amazing to think of the students and families with whom I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with over the years and I wish each of our graduates much success and the realization of their goals / dreams.
Extended School Year 2011-2012
Our district will, once again, be delivering Extended School Year services for identified students. The dates for the program have been changed from immediately following the school year to later in the summer. The reasoning behind this move is to provide the following:
a. Students will be able to recoup skills that could be lost during the earlier summer ESY;
b. Students and teachers can rest and recharge at the end of the school year;
c. Students can get a "jump start" on the school year by easing through these services.
The specific dates, times and locations for ESY are as follows:
Early Childhood and Elementary Students K-5
Peotone Elementary School
Mondays through Thursdays, 8 AM to 11:45 AM
July 16, 2012 through August 9, 2012
Junior High and High School Students
Peotone Junior High School
Mondays through Thursdays, 8 AM to 11:45 AM
July 16, 2012 through August 9, 2012
We will evaluate the effectiveness of this "delayed" extended school year to determine its effectiveness and success. Parent, Guardian and Staff will be surveyed and ongoing assessments will utilized in deciding subsequent ESY programming in the district.
S.M.I.L.E.S.
Due to the support of our school board, the tuition rate for non-special education students has been reduced to the $175.00 per month! This is a $100.00 drop from the previous rate. Research and district data has indicated that students with and without developmental delays benefit from a "blended" pre-school model. We are so excited about this return to this model!
Registration clarified
We received numerous calls from parents wishing to be placed on the list to enter S.M.I.L.E.S. as tuition students for the new school year. When reviewing the registration packet of materials we noticed several out of date forms. The registrtion forms needed revision and in order to avoid any further confusion, I directed the Special Services secretary, Jenni Stanfa, to speak with each of the parents who signed up for next year in order to secure a tuition slot for next year by collecting a non-refundable deposit to cover the first month in the S.M.I.L.E.S. program. Approximately half of the parents who called have arranged with our office to make the deposit ( check or money order) with our office. Some confuson persists that I would like to clarify. We will be sending the
registration packets to the parents who have made the deposit once the registration signs have been updated.
Our original cut-off date is Friday, May 11, 2012. Given that there is a level of confusion about the process, we will open another window to secure placements over the summer. We will contact the remaining families by telephone regarding the next payment window. The dates will be determined and calls made to the remaining families who signed up for a place and have yet to make a deposit.
When coming to make the deposit, during the school year, it is imperativie that you sign in at the Connor Shaw School Office, 212 West Wilson Street, Peotone, IL 60468. Signs are posted to direct persons making deposits and are lableled "S.M.I.L.E.S. registration".
Teacher appreciatiion week
In concert with all of the outpouring of appreciation for teachers in our district that I have witnessed, I would like to also thank all of the teaching staff, psychologists, social workers, speech language pathologists, itinerant teachers. occupational and physical therapists, nurses, and our transition coordinator for all that they do on behalf of all of the children in Peotone C.U.S.D. #207-U schools! It is wonderful to work with such dedicated certified and non-certififed staff. THANK YOU!
